How to import an electric car to Europe: duty, VAT and approval

Bringing a car into Europe from outside the EU or UK is possible, but it has more paperwork than many buyers expect. Here is what to plan for.

1. Expect import duty and VAT

Cars that arrive from outside the EU or UK normally pay customs duty (often around 10 percent of the customs value for passenger cars, though trade agreements and the country of origin can change this) and then VAT on the total. Rates and rules change, so confirm them with your customs authority.

2. Check that the car can be registered

A car must usually meet European type-approval rules before it can be registered for the road. Some cars were built for other markets and need a conformity certificate or an individual approval, which can add time and cost. Ask this question before you buy, not after.

3. Mind the steering side and the charging plug

Most of Europe drives on the right with left-hand-drive cars, while the UK and Ireland drive on the left. The CCS2 plug is the usual standard for electric cars in Europe, and every car we list shows its charging standard.

4. Work out the full landed cost

The price on the advert is only the start. Add ocean freight and insurance, duty, VAT, port fees and registration. Try our shipping and duty calculator for an estimate.

5. Ship, clear and register

After payment is confirmed the car is inspected, the export papers are prepared and the car is shipped with a tracking number. When it arrives, customs clears it, you pay the duty and taxes, and then the car is registered locally.

Common questions

Is it cheaper to import an electric car to Europe?

Sometimes. Compare the full landed cost, including duty, VAT and registration, with local prices before you decide.

Do I need type approval?

Usually the car must be approved for road use in the country where it will be registered. Check this for the exact model before buying.
