The usual starting point: the customs value
Most customs authorities start from the customs value of the car, often the CIF value (the car plus freight and insurance). A percentage duty is applied to that value, and further taxes such as VAT or levies may be added on top.
Why rates differ
Some countries lower the duty on electric or hybrid cars to encourage them, others charge by engine size, the age of the car, or the emissions. These rules change, so always confirm the current rate with your customs authority or a clearing agent.
Estimate first, then confirm
We show an estimate of duty and taxes in your quotation and in the calculator. It is a guide only: the final figure is set by customs on arrival and is paid to the authority, not to us.
Plan a small safety margin
Exchange rates, valuation checks and port fees can move the final amount slightly. Keep a margin so the car can be cleared without delay.
Common questions
Do electric cars pay less import duty?
In some countries yes, in others no. It depends on local rules, so check the current rate with your customs authority.
Who do I pay the duty to?
To your country's customs authority (or through your clearing agent), when the car arrives.
