1. Check the side of the road and the steering side
Many Asian countries drive on the left (for example India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Japan) and normally need right-hand-drive cars. Others drive on the right (for example the Philippines, Vietnam and South Korea) and need left-hand-drive cars. 2. Find out if used cars are allowed, and how old they can be
Some Asian countries welcome used-car imports, some allow them only with a permit or a licence, and some restrict them heavily. Age limits are common. Always confirm the current rule with your customs authority or a licensed clearing agent before you pay for anything.
3. Look at the duty and taxes for electric and hybrid cars
Several Asian markets treat electric and hybrid cars differently from petrol cars, with lower duty in some places and extra taxes in others. These rules change often. Our calculator gives an estimate for the countries we serve, and your customs authority sets the final amount.
4. Make sure the charging plug fits
Most of the electric cars we list use the CCS2 plug, while some Asian markets use other standards. Read our charging standards guide and check what chargers you can reach before you choose a car.
5. Follow the same safe steps as any import
Get a written quotation, pay only into the designated Regional Agent bank account for your region, receive the inspection report and export papers, follow the shipment with your tracking number, and clear the car through customs. You can see every step on the how it works page.
